Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

There is no evidence from the Sunnah or the Salaf that one should congratulate another Muslim on New Year’s, Gregorian or Hijri. InshaAllah I wanted to remind myself and my Muslim brothers and sisters that this month of Muharram is a special month indeed. It is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The Sahaba (ra) at first did not know how to start the year. Were they to start it on the day the Prophet (saw) was born? Or perhaps the day they were victorious in the Battle of Badr? Or maybe the day the Prophet (saw) made hijrah to Madina? In the end, the companions of the Prophet (saw) decided that the first day would be Muharram 1, the day the Prophet (saw) made Hijrah to Madina. The 10th day was known as a day of mandatory fasting on the Muslims, before Ramadan became obligatory; then this day (’Ashoura) became a Sunnah to fast, a voluntary fast. However, there are narrations that whomever fasts this day, a past year of sins will be forgiven by the Mercy of Allah (SWT). Some scholars stated their advice that it would be wise to fast the 9th, 10th, and 11th, so that one is sure InshaAllaah that they received the reward of the 10th of Muharram. The reason so is that sometimes we might start the month early by accident, or might be a day behind, etc. This way - fasting the 9th, 10th, and 11th, one is sure to have attained the reward InshaAllaah.

Exactly 1,429 years ago, the Prophet (saw) rode out to Madina. Around that time, the message of Islam was spreading. The Muslims became stronger in Madina, where they were not being persecuted by the polytheists of Quraysh. Where are we and this message of truth? The Prophet (saw) said, “Inform the [message] of me [and Islam], even if with a single verse.” Have we been keeping this duty? How many people have we influenced? How many people have you changed?

This Muslim Ummah needs more revivers, more scholars, more people of knowledge and devotion, not teens and adults misled by the attachments of this world.

Where are you Oh Muslim Ummah? It has been 1,429 years since this message began. Spread the message, and leave the rest to Allah (SWT).

Do not forget to fast the day of Ashoura InshaAllaah.

May Allah (SWT) (swt) guide this Ummah and help us to spread the message, and guide each and everyone of us to the proper teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, and aid us in our daily lives to become better believers, and to let us die on this religion of truth, and to be protected from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the Afterlife, and to be granted into the highest ranks of Paradise.

Ameen

Wassalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu
