Causes That Bring About Love for the Lord of the Worlds

6 06 2008

~*Causes That Bring About Love for the Lord of the Worlds*~
Abdullah bin Jarullah al-Jarullah

From ‘The Delight of Faith’

(1) Recognizing the bounties Allah (SWT) has bestowed upon His slaves. These bounties [are so many that they] cannot be counted or enumerated. [Allah (SWT) says:]

“If you count the blessings of Allah (SWT), never will you be able to count them.” [14:34]

Hearts naturally have love for those who do good to them. Love for a blessing is from the general aspects of thanking the one who has bestowed a bounty. It is said that thanks is with the heart, tongue and limbs.

(2) Another cause is to have knowledge of Allah (SWT) by His Names, Attributes and Actions. The one who knows Allah (SWT), loves Him. Whoever loves Him, obeys Him. Whoever obeys Allah (SWT) is honored by Him. Whoever Allah (SWT) honors, He will have him live close to Him. Whoever lives close to Him, has attained the glad tidings.

(3) One of the great causes [that leads to having love of Allah (SWT)] is the specific knowledge that comes about through pondering over the creation of the heavens and the earth and what Allah (SWT) has created. In the Qur’an, there is much mention of the signs of Allah (SWT) that indicate His Greatness, Power, Majesty, Perfection, Eminence, Compassion, Mercy, Strength, Subjugation and other of His beautiful Names and exalted Attributes. Whenever one’s knowledge of Allah (SWT) is strengthened, one’s love for Him is also strengthened and one’s love for obeying Him is also strengthened. He will then experience the pleasure of worship, whether it be in prayer, remembrance or other forms of worship.

(4) Another cause that will bring about love for Allah (SWT) is to act towards Allah (SWT) with sincerity and purity while going against one’s desires. This is a cause for Allah (SWT) to bless a slave and when He blesses the slave, the slave loves Him.

(5) One of the greatest causes that bring about one’s love for Allah (SWT) is increasing one’s remembrance of Allah (SWT). Whenever a person loves something, he remembers it more often. And it is through the remembrance of Allah (SWT) that the hearts find tranquillity. In fact, one of the signs of having love for Allah (SWT) is the constant remembrance of Allah (SWT) by one’s heart and tongue.

(6) One of the causes that brings about Allah (SWT)’s love for His slave is reciting the Qur’an often and pondering over its meaning, in particular those verses that contain Allah (SWT)’s Names, Attributes and Actions. Having fondness for that action will lead the slave to love Allah (SWT) and Allah (SWT) to love Him.

(7) Another of the causes of love for Allah (SWT) is remembering what has been mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah concerning the believers seeing their Lord in the Hereafter and visiting them and gathering together on the Day of Abundance. That will definitely bring about in a person love for Allah (SWT).

The story of the Shaykh from Azhar and the Prostitute

27 05 2008

muslimah.jpg

Did you hear of the story of the Shaykh from Azhar and the prostitute?

No …

Well, here you go, as was narrated by Shaykh Ali Tantawi [May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him] in his memoir about Shaykh Ahmad Al-Zayaat [May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him].

Shaykh Ali Tantawi said:

“The Shaykh (Ahmad Al-Zayaat) was a teacher, who did not know anything of this world except: The Azhar where he used to teach, the house he used to live in, and the road between them.

As years passed by, and he got older, his health started to deteriorate, and he needed to rest. So the doctor forced him to take some time of, and suggested that he goes somewhere away from his place of work and residence, and advised him to enjoy the quietness and calmness of the parks next to the Nile.

So one day, the Shaykh went out and stopped a carriage (as cars were not that available at the time). He told the driver: My son, take me to a nice place were I can enjoy the view and relax.

The driver of the carriage, however, was a wicked person, and took the Shaykh to a place in Egypt, which at the time had several prostitution houses.

After arriving he told the Shaykh: Here [we are].

The Shaykh said: O son, Magrib prayer is drawing near, where can I pray? Take me first to the Masjid.

The Driver [pointing to one of those houses] said: The Masjid is over there.

The door [of the place] was open, and the lady running that house was sitting, in the manner those like her usually sit.

When the Shaykh saw her, he lowered his gaze. He saw a seat, so he headed there and sat, waiting for the Call for prayer (Adhan).

[The woman in confusion, just] stared at him.

What brought that man here?

He doesn’t look like any of her regular customers.

She kept thinking to herself, but did not dare ask him what he was doing here.

What kept her from asking was the shyness that remained in her heart, even as a prostitute. However, that shyness only appears in front of people of Piety.

He, on the other hand, kept doing Tasbeeh (saying Subhan Allah (SWT)), whilst looking at his watch, until he heard the Adhan of Maghrib from far away.

He asked her: Where is the Moazin (Person who calls for prayers) here?

Why didn’t he call for prayer when the time entered?

Are you his daughter?

She … kept silent.

He waited for a while, and then said: My daughter, Maghrib time is short, and it is not permissible to delay it, and I do not see anyone here, so if you have your Wudu (ablution) then pray behind me Jama’ah.

He gave the call for prayer, and without looking at her, as he was about to give the Iqamah, he noticed stillness behind him?!

He asked: What is wrong? Don’t you have your Wudu?

All of a sudden, as if her Iman (Faith) woke up and she remembered the old days. The days when she was filled with purity, and was away from sin, she started to cry loudly, and threw herself at his feet.

The Shaykh surprised, did not know in what way he can calm her.

She then, started narrating her story.

He saw in her words great regret, and felt the truth in her repentance. He realized the sincerity in what she was saying, so he told her: Listen, my daughter, to what the Lord of all creation says: {Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the Mercy of Allah (SWT). Indeed Allah (SWT) forgives all sins …”} (39:53).

All sins, my daughter, all sins …

The door of repentance is open to every sinner and it is so wide that it can encompass them all no matter how heavy their load [of sins] is … even Kufr.

So whoever disbelieves in the all Mighty, after he was a believer, but repents before the hour of his death comes, and he was sincere in his repentance, and he renewed his Islam, Allah (SWT) will accept him.

Allah (SWT), my dear daughter, is the most Generous of all. Did you ever hear of anyone generous shutting the door in the face of those who come seeking him?

Stand up and go wash yourself, and cover yourself. Go and clean your skin with water and your heart with repentance and regret. Approach your Lord, and I will wait for you.

But do not delay, so that we do not miss Maghrib prayer.

She did as he asked, and returned to him with a new dress and a new heart. She stood behind him and prayed. She felt and tasted the sweetness of that prayer, and felt that this prayer purified her heart.

When the prayer was over, he told her: Come with me, and try to cut every relation you have with this place and everyone in it. Try to erase the time you spent here from your memory.

Consistently ask Allah (SWT) for his forgiveness, and increase in doing righteous deeds.

Verily, adultery is not as big a sin as Kufr, and Hind [bint ‘Utbah – May Allah (SWT) be pleased with her], who was a disbeliever and had animosity in her heart to the Prophet of Allah (SWT). After that she became from the righteous believers, and we started saying: Allah (SWT) is well-pleased with her.

The Shaykh then took her to a house of righteous ladies, and then found her a righteous husband and advised him to take good care of her” 1/252.

[Original writer in Arabic forum said]: Notice [May Allah (SWT) shower you with Mercy] the state of this woman, how she was and how she changed. It was nothing more than simple words from an old man that led her into changing her life upside down.

So if you only think how many people are just like this woman.

People who are drowning in filth, people who the dust from their sins gathered around their hearts shedding away its light.

These sins caused them to see the Truth as Falsehood and the Falsehood as Truth.

How much are they in need of one to take by their hands, and to clear the dust away from their hearts.

They do not need complicated educational and behavioral philosophical treatments, or theories in the manners of interaction and persuasion. Neither are they in need of complicated statements.

What they truly need is for someone to feel sorry for them and for their state … Someone to understand their situation and to hope for their guidance … Someone who would speak a word that would leave his heart, [and touch theirs]. A word which he seeks nothing from except the Face of Allah (SWT).

After this the light, that was for so long covered with sins, would emerge and their souls would return to its Fitrah, and would return to its harmony with the universe and to the true manner of life.

Points of Benefit, Insha’Allah

8 05 2008

Bismillah, Alhamdulilah,

May Allah (SWT)’s peace and blessings be upon the Last Prophet, and Messenger, his family, his companions and all the righteous who follow his way, ameen

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmatullah

SubhanAllah, it’s been a whole month with no new posts or updates! So sorry for that, dunya is distracting us all subhanAllah.

Let’s start up posting again now, insha’Allah (SWT). This piece below (taken from a forum) is about one of the salaf, Ibn Abee Haatim(328H) Rahimahullaah.

He said: ”I entered Damascus and came upon the students of hadeeth, and I passed by the circle of Qaasim al Joo’ee(d.248 AH). I found a group sitting around him and he was speaking. Their appearance amazed me; and I heard him saying:

”Seize The Benefit Of Five Things From The People Of Your Time:

When you are present, you are not known;

When you are absent you are not missed;

When you are seen, your advice is not sought;

When you say something, your saying is not accepted;

And when you have some knowledge, you are not given anything for it.

I Also Advise You With Five Matters:

When you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly;

When you are praised, do not become happy;

When you are criticized, do not become upset;

When you are not believed, do not become angry;

And if people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them.”

Ibn Abee Haatim said:”So I took that as my benefit from Damascus.”

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu

Inna Lillahi wa inna ‘ilayhi raji’oon. Indeed, From Allah (SWT) we come, and it is to Him we shall return.

We are saddened to write that two Scholars have passed away, in only the timespan of one week. SubhanAllah.

‘Abd-Allâh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas said: “I heard the Messenger of Allâh (peace and blessings of Allâh be upon him) say, ‘Allâh does not take knowledge away by taking it away from people’s (hearts); He takes knowledge away by taking away the scholars (i.e., when scholars die), and when there is not one scholar left, the people will turn to ignorant leaders who, when they are consulted, will give fatwas without knowledge. They are misguided and they misguide others.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 98).

Mihbarah All the Way to the Maqbarah

7 02 2008

“I will be with the mihbarah (inkwell) all the way to the maqbarah (graveyard).”

In the Name of Allah (SWT), the Most Merciful, the All-Merciful, may His salâh and salâm be upon His Final Messenger.

Imâm Ahmad had two sons, ‘Abdullâh and Sâlih, whom were half-brothers. Sâlih relates that “A man saw my father carrying a mihbarah (a wooden inkwell that students used to carry along with their pens) and said, ‘O Abâ ‘Abdillâh! You are the Imâm of the Muslims!’

 ”This man spoke like this since he was surprised to see Imâm Ahmad carrying his mihbarah as the young students would carry it, or indeed that he would still read books, or shoulder the same responsibilities that the youth did. Note also how all the people were fascinated by him (by Imâm Ahmad), even the elders of the people!

Imâm Ahmad replied with a statement that nullified this man’s whole understanding. He said:

“I will be with the mihbarah all the way to the maqbarah (graveyard).”What did he mean?

 He meant, “I will be busy with knowledge until I die.” Another narration mentions that he said this same statement on a separate occasion to another group of people:“As for me, I will seek knowledge until I am placed in the grave.”When the time of his death came near, he said to those around him:“Relate to me the statement of Hushaym.” (Hushaym was Hushaym ibn Bashîr, Imâm Ahmad’s first teacher. He met him in the year 179AH, when he began seeking knowledge at the age of 16) So they read to him what he had requested. This narrated tradition mentioned that Ibn Sîrîn used to dislike a person groaning from pain. At that time, Imâm Ahmad had became very ill and he used to groan due to the pain yet when they informed him that Ibn Sîrîn used to dislike groaning at such a time, he did not groan again until he died.This is the reality of his statement, “I will seek knowledge until I am placed in the grave,” meaning, “I must continue benefiting from knowledge.”
So if you have left your youth behind and become a teacher or an educator, or a lecturer or professor in the university, or an author, and you say, “I have finished seeking knowledge,” know that this is the situation of someone who does not know the reality of his affairs.Al-’Ilm is knowledge of what?
 It is knowledge of the Speech of Allah (SWT) and the speech of His Messenger, peace be upon him.

Has anyone reached a level of awareness of the meanings of the Speech of Allah (SWT) and His Messenger, peace be upon him, and also the statements of the scholars explaining the Book and the sunnah, a level of awareness that is sufficient?No one has reached that level. No one who has the right intention and a proper heart has reached that level. Regarding this, Imâm Ahmad said, “With the mihbarah all the way to the maqbarah.” He was addressing everyone, advising us to continue seeking knowledge and not to give it up for any petty reason.In the study circles of our mosques we have seen a great number of students who are eager to learn for two months, and then they abandon it.

Three months or so only. What is this?! Some of them seek knowledge for 3, 4, 5, or 7 years and then they abandon it.Why is that? Is it because the lure of the world has come to you, so you are finished and now you head off into the world? Is it because a position was offered to you and you took it?  Is it because you have reached a certain status, you have become a school director or professor in the university? For this you reason you have stopped seeking knowledge? No! You must continue seeking knowledge until you die. This is what will correct the society’s problems, if their scholars take this advice. As for the students of knowledge, then they must hold fast to this advice, “With the mihbarah all the way to the maqbarah.”He must stay with his book until he dies – reading, learning, memorizing, reviewing, teaching, until his end.

What are the people saying these days? “The rulings related to prayer, we know them, no problem.” If you asked them about many of the rulings, you will find that they do not know them. Why is that? It is because they have become satisfied with the knowledge they have, even delighted that they have the knowledge they have. We ask Allah (SWT) that He excuses us and that He is pleased with us.If you asked them about affairs even greater than the prayer, issues of creed, issues of tawhîd, you will find that they have not fully grasped the issues, and they used to be students of knowledge! Why is that? Because they were negligent, and thus abandoned it.

Knowledge is honor, if you abandon it, it will abandon you. If you take the task seriously, you will be given some of it, from what Allah (SWT) has decreed for you.

Learning Knowledge of the Religion for the Sake of this World and concealing that knowledge.

21 01 2008

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu!

Allah (SWT) Most High says:
Only the learned among His slaves fear Allah (SWT). [Fatir 35:28]
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, in explaining this verse, said That is to say, only those of My creation have awe of Me who know My Omnipotence, My Glory, and My Dominion. Mujahid and Sh’abi said: The learned person is the one who fears Allah (SWT).
Rabi’ bin Anas said: The one who does not fear Allah (SWT) is not learned.

Allah (SWT) Most High says:
Truly, those who hide the proofs and the guidance which we revealed after We made it clear to the people in the Scripture- those are cursed by Allah (SWT) and cursed by those who curse. [al-Baqarah 2: 159]

This verse was revealed concerning the Jewish scholars. [The proofs] are the commandments and the prescribed punishment. [ The guidance] is the news and the praise of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) (contained in the scripture of the Jews but concealed by them); [We made it clear to the people] – that is, to the children of Israel- [ in the Scripture] – that is, in the Torah. [Those] are the ones among the Jews who conceal this information, and they are cursed by Allah (SWT) and by [those who curse,] which, according to Ibn ‘Abbas, includes all things excepting jinn and humankind.
Ibn Mas’ood said: To Muslims do not curse each other without their curse returning to the Jews and Christians, who have concealed the news about the coming of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) (SAW) and the description of him.

Allah (SWT) most High says: And when Allah (SWT) took a covenant from those who had received the scripture, to make it known to the people and not to hide it. But they threw it (the covenant) behind their backs and bought with it a trifling gain. Then, evil is that which they have bought! [Ale ‘’Imran 3:87]
Wahidi said: this verse came down concerning the Jews of Madinah. Allah (SWT) took a covenant from them in the torah that they would make known to everyone the prophecy concerning Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), his characteristics, and the place where he would appeare, and not hide it. Al-Hasan said that here the Jewish scholars are referred to. Ibn ‘Abbas commented that they (the Jewish scholars) flung their covenant with Allah (SWT) behind their backs in order to [buy with it a trifling gain,]which consisted of their authority and respect among their people because of their learning and scholarship; but [evil is that] bargain, and they were the losers.

Allah (SWT)’s Messenger (SAW) said: if anyone acquires such knowledge by Allah (SWT) Allah (SWT)’s pleasure Is to be sought (i.e., knowledge of the religion), but he acquires it only to get some worldly advantage, he will not experience the fragrance of the Garden on the Day of Resurrection. (Ahmad)
We have already reported a Hadith from Abu Hurairah concerning three persons who will be dragged to the Fire, including the one who will be told: You acquired knowledge so that people might call you learned, and they have done so.

Allah (SWT)’s Messenger (SAW) said: if anyone seeks knowledge to use it in competing with the learned or disputing with the foolish or to attract men’s attention to himself, Allah (SWT) will cause him to enter the Fire. ( Tirmidhi)

Allah (SWT)’s messenger (SAW) said: “If anyone is asked about such knowledge but conceal it, he will restrain with a bridle of fire on the Day of Resurrection.””
The Prophet (SAW) used to supplicate: I seek refuge in You from such knowledge from which no benefit is derived. (Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nisai)
And he said: The one who acquires knowledge but does not act on it, has acquired it only to increase his pride. (Tirmidhi)

Hilal ibn “Ala said: Seeking knowledge is hard; retraining it in memory is harder than seeking it; applying it is harder than retraining it in memory; and remaining safe from it is harder than applying it.

We ask Allah (SWT) to keep us safe from every trouble and guide us to what He likes and what he is please with. Indeed, he is the Magnanimous and Generous!

What is so special about Muharram?

17 01 2008

What’s So Special About Muharram?

1) It is the first month of the Hijri calendar.

2) It is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (sa) said: ‘The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of: Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha’baan.’ (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2958).

3) The 10th of Muharram is the ‘day of Ashura

Fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ does expiate for the past year, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: For fasting the day of ‘Ashura, I hope that Allah (SWT) will accept it as expiation for (the sins committed in) the year that went before.’ (Narrated by Muslim, 1162.) This is by the bounty that Allaah bestows upon us, whereby fasting one day expiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allaah is the Owner of great bounty.

4) Sins in this month are more serious, and good deeds bring greater reward

It was reported that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: Allaah’s words (interpretation of the meaning):’so wrong not yourselves therein…’referred to all the months, then these four were singled out and made sacred, so that sin in these months is more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward.

5) Virtues of observing Nafl (voluntary fasts)

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (sa) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadaan is fasting Allaah’s month of Muharram.’ (reported by Muslim, 1982).

InshaaAllah the day of ‘Ashoora’ is on Friday (18th Jan 2008), and those who intend to fast are required to fast Thursday (Jan 17th) or Saturday also (Jan 19th) – in order to avoid singling out the Friday for fasting.

May Allah (SWT) accept from us and you..

Asalaamu Alaaikum. Welcome!!

11 12 2007

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu and Welcome to Ilmcentral!!

The Prophet, SAW said: “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim”

The pious predecessors before us traveled to distant lands in search of this knowledge. Some traveled hundreds of miles just to learn one Hadith. SubhanAllah! Now, we are in an age where we do not have to travel far for knowledge, rather it is literally a click away! There are thousands of resources to learn from, especially online. In the internet we can find the works of many scholars who lived before, and also scholars who live amongst us now. We can find collections of Hadith; we can even find the whole tafseer (explanation) of the Quran. We can converse with the scholars of Islam, we can read their books and gain benefit from them. There are tons of resources that are there for us to use and take advantage of!

With this being said, I and a group of Muslims from all around the world have come together to use this resource, (the internet), as a tool to spread and share correct knowledge with the Muslim Ummah.

Our first project is this blog, called IMCENTRAL.

What is Ilmcentral?

Ilmcentral is a center (site) for learning correct knowledge about many subjects such as Aqeedah, Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Seerah and History from the scholars of Ahl Sunnah wa Al Jama’ah.

Who runs Ilmcentral?

IlmCentral will Insha’Allah (SWT) be administered by a group of dedicated Muslims coming from all over the world. However their jobs will not be to teach, but rather to gather and spread books, audios, articles and videos already on the net by trustworthy scholars and share them the Muslim Ummah.

Who is IlmCentral for?

IlmCentral is for every Muslim seeking to learn more about their deen from a trustworthy site and from those scholars who are on the Quran and the Sunnah.
