Four Poisons of the Heart Part 1
From the works of Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbabli, Ibn Al-Qayyim al-Jawziyaa, and Abu Hamid al-Ghazali

Bismillaahir-RaHmaanir-RaHeem

You should know that all acts of disobedience are poison to the heart and cause its sickness and ruin. They result in its will running off course, against that of Allah (SWT), and so its sickness festers and increases. Ibn al-Mubarak said:

I have seen wrong actions killing hearts, And their degradation may lead to their becoming addicted to them. Turning away from wrong actions gives life to the hearts, And opposing your self is best for it.

Whoever is concerned with the health and life of his heart, must rid it of the effects of such poisons, and then protect it by avoiding new ones. If he takes any by mistake, then he should hasten to wipe out their effect by turning in repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah (SWT), as well as by doing good deeds that will wipe out his wrong actions.

By the four poisons we mean unnecessary talking, unrestrained glances, too much food, and keeping bad company. Of all the poisons, these are the most widespread and have the greatest effect on a heart’s well-being.

Unnecessary Talking

It is reported in al-Musnad, on the authority of Anas, that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The faith of a servant is not put right until his heart is put right, and his heart is not put right until his tongue is put right.” 1 This shows that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam has made the purification of faith conditional on the purification of the heart, and the purification of the heart conditional on the purification of the tongue.

At-Tirmidhi relates in a hadith on the authority of Ibn Umar: “Do not talk excessively without remembering Allah (SWT), because such excessive talk without the mention of Allah (SWT) causes the heart to harden, and the person furthest from Allah (SWT) is a person with a hard heart.”

Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with him, said: “A person who talks too much is a person who often makes mistakes, and someone who often makes mistakes, often has wrong actions. The Fire has a priority over such a frequent sinner.”

In a hadith related on the authority of Mu’adh, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Shall I not tell you how to control all that?” I said, “Yes do, O Messenger of Allah (SWT).” So he held his tongue between his fingers, and then he said: “Restrain this.” I said, “Oh Prophet of Allah (SWT), are we accountable for what we say?” He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “May your mother be bereft by your loss! Is there anything more than the harvest of the tongues that throws people on their faces (or he said ‘on their noses’) into the Fire?”

What is meant here by ‘the harvest of the tongues’ is the punishment for saying forbidden things. A man, through his actions and words, sows the seeds of either good or evil. On the Day of Resurrection he harvests their fruits. Those who sow the seeds of good words and deeds harvest honour and blessings; those who sow the seeds of evil words and deeds reap only regret and remorse.

A hadith related by Abu Huraira says, “What mostly causes people to be sent to the Fire are the two openings: the mouth and the private parts.”

Abu Huraira also related that the Messenger of Allah (SWT) sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “The servant speaks words, the consequences of which he does not realise, and for which he is sent down into the depths of the Fire further than the distance between the east and the west.”

The same hadith was transmitted by at-Tirmidhi with slight variations: “The servant says something that he thinks is harmless, and for which he will be plunged into the depths of the Fire as far as seventy autumns.” 7

Uqba ibn Amir said: “I said: “O Messenger of Allah (SWT), what is our best way of surviving?’ He, may Allah (SWT) bless him and grant him peace, replied: “Guard your tongue, make your house suffice for sheltering your privacy, and weep for your wrong actions.”

It has been related on the authority of Sahl ibn Sa’d that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Whoever can guarantee what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him the Garden.”

It has also been related by Abu Huraira, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah (SWT) bless him and grant him peace, said, “Let whoever believes in Allah (SWT) and the Last Day either speak good or remain silent.”

Thus talking can either be good, in which case it is commendable, or bad, in which case it is haram.

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “Everything the children of Adam say goes against them, except for their enjoining good and forbidding evil, and remembering Allah (SWT), Glorious and Might is He.” This was reported by at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Ma’jah on the authority of Umm Habiba, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her.

Umar ibn al-Khattab visited Abu Bakr, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with them, and found him pulling his tongue with his fingers. Umar said “Stop! may Allah (SWT) forgive you!” Abu Bakr replied; “This tongue has brought me to dangerous places.”

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: “By Allah (SWT), besides Whom no god exists, nothing deserves a long prison sentence more than my tongue.” He also used to say: “O tongue, say good and you will profit; desist from saying evil things and you will be safe; otherwise you will find only regret.”

Abu Huraira reported that Ibn al-Abbas said: “A person will not feel greater fury or anger for any part of his body on the Day of Judgement more than what he will feel for his tongue, unless he only used it for saying or enjoining good.”

Al-Hassan said: “Whoever does not hold his tongue cannot understand his deen.”

The least harmful of a tongue’s faults is talking about whatever does not concern it. The following hadith of the Prohet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is enough to indicate the harm of this fault: “One of the merits of a person’s Islam is his abandoning what does not concern him.” 13

Abu Ubaida related that al-Hassan said: “One of the signs of Allah (SWT)’s abandoning a servant is His making him preoccupied with what does not concern him.”

Sahl said, “Whoever talks about what does not concern him is deprived of truthfulness.”

As we have already mentioned above, this is the least harmful of the tongue’s faults. There are far worse things, like backbiting, gossiping, obscene and misleading talk, two-faced and hypocritical talk, showing off, quarrelling, bickering, singing, lying, mockery, derision and falsehood; and there are many more faults which can affect a servant’s tongue, ruining his heart and causing him to lose both his happiness and pleasure in this life, and his success and profit in the next life. Allah (SWT) is the One to Whom we turn for assistance.

Points of Benefit, Insha’Allah

Bismillah, Alhamdulilah,

May Allah (SWT)’s peace and blessings be upon the Last Prophet, and Messenger, his family, his companions and all the righteous who follow his way, ameen

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmatullah

SubhanAllah, it’s been a whole month with no new posts or updates! So sorry for that, dunya is distracting us all subhanAllah.

Let’s start up posting again now, insha’Allah (SWT). This piece below (taken from a forum) is about one of the salaf, Ibn Abee Haatim(328H) Rahimahullaah.

He said: ”I entered Damascus and came upon the students of hadeeth, and I passed by the circle of Qaasim al Joo’ee(d.248 AH). I found a group sitting around him and he was speaking. Their appearance amazed me; and I heard him saying:

”Seize The Benefit Of Five Things From The People Of Your Time:

When you are present, you are not known;

When you are absent you are not missed;

When you are seen, your advice is not sought;

When you say something, your saying is not accepted;

And when you have some knowledge, you are not given anything for it.

I Also Advise You With Five Matters:

When you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly;

When you are praised, do not become happy;

When you are criticized, do not become upset;

When you are not believed, do not become angry;

And if people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them.”

Ibn Abee Haatim said:”So I took that as my benefit from Damascus.”

Related by Ibn al Jawzee in Sifatus-safwah(2/200).

May we all implement the Sheikhs advice,

I Turn to You

23 03 2008

I turn to you Ya Allah (SWT); I stand before you with an open heart
A heart which longs for you to reciprocate the love that it embraces
Oh Allah (SWT) I am ready to follow your way and make a clean start
For it is your path now that my heart entirely encompasses
I now take pleasure in surrendering myself to you Ar Raheem
With my forehead on the ground only for you Al Kareem
Without you Ya Allah (SWT) I am not anything
My life has no purpose, no meaning
Without you Ya Allah (SWT) what do I have?
Nothing, except an empty, vacant feeling in my heart
Walking blindly with no clear path,
Everything seems pointless and futile
But with you in my life, Ya Allah (SWT), my struggles seem worthwhile
With you in my life my heart is bursting with emotions
No longer do I feel dissatisfaction and frustration
But instead a deep passion, such a wonderful sensation
An uplifting feeling, a feeling of ecstasy
I thank you Allah (SWT) for your path has healed me
Your words have enveloped my very soul
And as I utter these words I feel whole
My heart feels content, fulfilled and complete
And all it longs for now is the day when we will finally meet.

Jumuah Mubarak!

14 03 2008

Asalaamu Alaaikum wa Rahmtullah!

Jumuah Mubarak dear Muslim brothers and sisters!

SubhanAllah,it’s Friday already, time is going by so fast, May Allah (SWT) increase us in goodness and not make us of those who waste their time, ameen

The (video) lecture for this friday is about Khushoo in Salah! What is Khushoo!? Listen to the talk and find out, insha’Allah (SWT) :)

Lecture Info: In this Lecture, Shaykh Yaser Birjas diagnoses a malaise affecting our Salah, the second most important aspect of our religion after the Shahadah.  He explains why we do not benefit from our Salah, why our minds are distracted, and why our prayers are sometimes mere chores of the limbs.  This lecture opens our minds to the causes for the above problems and goes on to propose a practical methodology by which we can strengthen our connection with the Creator.  InshAllah, by the end of this lecture, we will be able to recognize the problems affecting our Salah, realize the importance of Khushoo, as well as learn techniques of gaining Khushoo in Salah.

Speaker:  Sheikh Yasir Birjas (of Al Maghrib Institute)

Here are some reminders for Jumuah:

Reminders for Friday:
1) Read Surat Al-Kahf (The Cave), chapter 18
2) Pray on the Prophet (pbuh) many times
3) Attend the sermon quietly — no speaking.
4) Make du’aa for your Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world.

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

Allah (SWT) (SWT)’s Apostle (pbuh) said, “The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty.”Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah (SWT) (SWT)’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, “When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.”

 Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported that while Allah (SWT) (SWT)’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) was delivering the sermon on Friday a person came there, and the Apostle of Allah (SWT) (SWT) (may peace be upon him) said to him: So and so, have you prayed (two rak’ahs)? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then stand and pray.

The above hadith are all narrated from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim-

Three Tough Questions

13 03 2008

Asalaaamu Alaaaikum wa Rahmatullah

“Threee Tough Questions”

There was a young man who went overseas to study for quite a long time. When he returned, he asked his parents to find him a religious scholar or any expert who could answer his 3 Questions. Finally, his parents were able to find a Muslim scholar.

Young man: Who are you? Can you answer my questions?

Scholar: I am one of Allah (SWT) (SubHana Wa Ta`ala )’s slaves and Insha-Allah (SWT) (God willing), I will be able to answer your questions.

Young man: Are you sure? A lot of Professors and experts were not able to answer my questions.

Scholar: I will try my best, with the help of Allah (SWT)(SubHana Wa Ta`ala).

Young Man: I have 3 questions:

1. Does God exist? If so, show me His shape.

2. What is takdir (fate)?

3. If shaitan (Devil) was created from the fire, why at the end he will be thrown to hell that is also created from fire. It certainly will not hurt him at all, since Shaitan (Devil) and the hell were created from fire. Did God not think of it this far?

Suddenly, the Scholar slapped the young man’s face very hard.

Young Man (feeling pain): Why do you get angry at me?

Scholar: I am not angry. The slap is my answer to your three questions.

Young Man: I really don’t understand. Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you?

Young Man: Of course, I felt the pain.

Scholar: So do you believe that pain exists?

Young Man: Yes.

Scholar: Show me the shape of the pain!

Young Man: I cannot.

Scholar: That is my first answer. All of us feel God’s existence without being able to see His shape… Last night, did you dream that you will be slapped by me?

Young Man: No.

Scholar: Did you ever think that you will get a slap from me, today?

Young Man: No.

Scholar: That is takdir (fate)…….. My hand that I used to slap you, what is it created from?

Young Man: It is created from flesh.

Scholar: How about your face, what is it created from?

Young Man: Flesh.

Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you?

Young Man: In pain.

Scholar: Even though Shaitan (Devil) and also the hell were created from the fire, if Allah (SWT) wants, insha-Allah (SWT) (God willing), the hell will become a very painful place for Shaitan (Devil).

::::Inner Balance::::

8 03 2008

pink-flower.jpg

Sheikh Salman al-Oadah

It is good to unwind. It is good to take some time to reflect on life, to take delight in it and seek balance in the good things life has to offer. Sometimes this means we have to take a couple of steps back and look at things from a slightly different angle.

We see this in the way Allah (SWT) addresses His Messenger (peace be upon him). He says: “Had We not expanded for you your breast, and relieved you of your burdens which weighed you down?” [Sûrah al-Inshirâh: 1-3]

Allah (SWT) also says: “Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter? And found thee wandering, and gave thee guidance? And found you in need and made you free of want?” [Sûrah al-Duhâ: 6-8]

There is nothing wrong with breaking your monotonous daily routine and trying out something different in order to inspire you, revitalize your way of thinking, and return your mind to a relaxed and balanced state, one that puts you in greater emotional harmony with your surroundings and with other people.

You need to be able to read the signs your body gives you and understand its needs. You need to know the warning signs that you have reached your limit.

Allah (SWT) says: “Therefore, when you art free (from your immediate task), still labour hard, and to your Lord turn (all) thy attention. ” [Sûrah al-Sharh: 7-8]

He says: “Truly, in the remembrance of Allah (SWT) do hearts find rest! ” [Sûrah al-Ra`d: 28]

Do not wear yourself down and do not take on more than you can handle. Your body has rights over you, and so does your inner self. A human perspective is better for our bodily well-being than angelic aspirations. Such a perspective is more stable and less in need of compromise down the road.

You should keep an open mind and be ready for the unexpected. Be prepared for the demands of you might have to face. The best kind of success is where you are able to see what you achieve as being the best there is in life. This gives you an inner safeguard from the unforeseen obstacles that might get in your way.

We do not have to be running to get ahead at every moment or struggling to take in everything that life throws at u. Sometimes, a little spontaneity can provide us with invaluable insights. A certain freeness of spirit is needed for life to go easy.

If we really think about it, we will see that fretting over all possibilities to the point of confusion actually makes it more difficult for us to distinguish what is correct from what is in error.

You need to to keep the faith that life is but an interesting conundrum, and you should strengthen your resolve with the knowledge that whatever bad might befall us, something good will rise out of it as long as you are patient, are ready to keep a level head, and move forward. It is not naïve to let bad experiences run their course. In truth, most of the negativity we face stems from our thinking – quite falsely – that we can get through life without taking any hard knocks. We must accept that there will be ups and downs.

Allah (SWT) says: “No calamity befalls save by Allah (SWT)’s leave. And whosoever believeth in Allah (SWT), He guides his heart.” [Sûrah al-Taghâbun: 11]

In Sahîh Muslim, Suhayb related that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “How amazing are the believer’s affairs; all his affairs are good for him. If good befalls him, he is grateful and that is good for him, and if he is afflicted by calamity he is patient and that is also good for him.”

Allah (SWT) also tells us: “And when the true believers saw the clans, they said: This is what Allah (SWT) and His messenger promised us would happen. What Allah (SWT) and His messenger told us was true. It did but confirm them in their faith and acceptance.” [Sûrah al-Ahzâb: 22]

Praise be to Allah (SWT) at all times and in all circumstances.
